The Falconets of Nigeria couldn’t progress to the semi-final of the ongoing FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup after losing 1-0 to Colombia on Sunday.
Janet Akekoromowei’s 19th-minute shot from distance was pushed onto the crossbar before Tumininu Adeshina forced a save from Luisa Agudelo a few minutes later.

Unfortunately, the Falconets were reduced to 10 players in the 77th minute when Kafayat Mafisere was sent off for a rough challenge.
A late stoppage-time goal from Valerin Loboa gave Colombia the victory over coach Moses Aduku’s team, who dominated most of the game. The Falconets are out of the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
As expected, the narrow defeat is one of the trending football topics across social media. Here are some of the reactions from Nigerians who can’t stop talking about the encounter.

“They overachieved given the situation during the buildup to the tournament, the shocking lack of firepower and capable midfielders… Lots to look forward to.”
Albahaca (@Abuotor) wrote:
“Unfortunate outcome, but there are a lot of positives to take from the team. Players like Rafiu, Nkwocha and Uzoma can immediately be part of the senior team.”
Naija Watch (@Naijawatch01) said:
“Please, we need a good and courageous coach to facilitate the transition of these girls to the Super Falcons. This is where I trust Randy Waldrum. The majority of these girls are very talented and ready for gradual integration.”
Ola James (@Allofgrace76) wrote:
“Kudos to the girls, keep improving yourselves. Even the Colombians can’t believe they won at FT.”
Adegboye Adedayo (@adegboye_dayo) wrote:
“The nucleus of these girls should immediately be elevated into the core of the Super Falcons.”
All Things Super Eagles (@AllThingsSuper_) wrote:
“Unlucky. The girls played so well. They dominated the entire game but lost because of the red card. Keep these girls; they are clearly talented. Also, please let’s groom Aduku. He has all it takes to be a top coach!”
Akorede Softe (@Kayloaded1) wrote:
“Unlucky is the right word for the team. They could have been two-nil up in the first half. Then again, this is football.”
Samwall (@wolexmind) wrote:
“Well done, girls. I’m super proud of them all, including the coaching crew. Great future ahead.”
Though the Falconets’ World Cup run ended abruptly, the mood among Nigerian fans is one of pride rather than despair.
Many believe the team was unlucky, praise the young players’ talent and call for the best of them to be groomed for the Super Falcons.
