U-20 Women'S World Cup: Three Nigerian Players To Watch

As Positive NG Vibes continues the countdown to the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in Poland, here are three Falconets players to watch.

 

Mary Mamudu

 

Mary Mamudu is one of the players tipped to take the world by storm because of her recent goalscoring form.

 

Known for her speed, Mary will shoulder the responsibility of turning defence into attack and combining well with the strikers.

 

Having scored in each of Nigeria's last two warm-up matches (Against Poland and South Korea), the 18-year-old Edo Queens forward is expected to find the back of the net regularly in Poland while also creating goalscoring opportunities for her teammates.

 

Her versatility also makes her suitable for a winger's role, putting in crosses for the forwards.

 

Janet Akekoromowei

 

Many Nigerians are counting on the young Benfica striker to get the goals for the Falconets, following her exploits with Nasarawa Amazons and Bayelsa Queens.

 

The Asisat Oshoala Academy product had an impressive 2024/25 season, scoring 13 goals in 19 matches for Nasarawa Amazons and earning the Nigeria Women Football League's Most Valuable Player award.

 

Her performances earned her a move to Bayelsa Queens in 2025, and her continued development there caught the attention of Benfica, who secured her signature this year on a deal running until 2028.

 

Janet will hope to follow in the footsteps of her idol, Asisat Oshoala, who broke into the limelight during the 2014 edition of the tournament.

 

Christiana Uzoma

 

If the Falconets are to repeat or surpass the runner-up finishes they achieved in 2010 and 2014, they will need to be strong defensively.

 

The defence must be organised and disciplined enough to keep opposing strikers from scoring.

 

Thankfully, goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma has the required experience and quality, having faced similar tasks at the 2024 U-17 World Cup.

 

The shot-stopper was between the posts for the Flamingos in the Dominican Republic, keeping two clean sheets in four games as Nigeria topped their group before falling to the United States in the quarter-finals.

 

Christiana has since developed, featuring consistently for reigning NWFL champions Edo Queens in the 2025/26 season.

 

She is one of the players tipped to make her family, nation, and the fans proud in Poland.

 

Nigeria's Group Stage Fixtures

 

The Falconets will begin their World Cup campaign with a mouthwatering clash against Spain on September 7, in a Group F that also features China PR and tournament debutants New Caledonia.

 

The Ladies will hope to start on a positive note by picking up maximum points before facing China PR on September 10 and New Caledonia on September 13.
